When was the last time you embarked on a new journey in life?
You should be learning and growing in places other than school. The globe is full of undiscovered treasures, unseen stories, and breathtaking landscapes. It’s natural to feel like you’ve reached a fork in the road or are trapped in a rut. At some point in their lives, everyone feels this way.
If you’re going through something similar, it could be time to start a new chapter in your life.
When do you think you’ll need to make a change in your life?
It’s easy to fall into the habit of doing things the same way you’ve always done them, especially when things are going well. You have a good career that pays well, you have fascinating relationships, you host game nights, and on weekends you volunteer at an animal shelter. It’s a wonderful life. What’s the point of changing something that isn’t broken?
Change does not – and should not – occur simply in the face of adversity. You don’t have to wait until you dread getting out of bed in the morning to do something you’ve always wanted to do.
Consider life as a long drive on the freeway. You will need to stop for gas, food, and sleep on occasion. However, just because a hotel appears and feels comfortable doesn’t indicate you’ll stay there indefinitely. Remember, this is merely a pit stop, not your final destination.
Many of us are in the middle of a pit stop in our lives. Because there is no friction, it feels nice and cozy. But consider this: are you really where you want to be, or are you just taking a break? Perhaps you’ve had dreams that are now dormant in the recesses of your mind. Was there a goal that had to be put on hold due to obligations?
It may be past time for you to get back on the road of life.
What should you do if you’re afraid of change?
Human brains prefer a tried-and-true routine to the unpredictable, which is why change may be frightening. The brain, on the other hand, is malleable and versatile. Give it a challenge, and once it succeeds, it’s just a matter of getting into the habit so it becomes second nature.
Real and imagined events are frequently the source of fear. For example, you want to leave a hazardous work or relationship but are having trouble doing so. It could be as a result of:
° negative self-talk;
° anxiety about the future (e.g., what do I do now, where do I go from here, etc. );
° lack of support from friends and/or family;
° self-doubts; and
° rehearsing awful or worst-case scenarios in your thoughts.
So, what should you do if taking the initial step seems impossible? Take a moment to close your eyes, inhale deeply, and remember that life is still full of possibilities. It makes no difference how many times you’ve made mistakes, how old you are, or where you’ve come from. Even if you aren’t entirely prepared, change occurs the moment you decide it is.
Begin with little steps: Begin with a good breakfast. Why not try muesli or blueberry pancakes instead of the customary bacon and eggs? Read something new, like a blog or a book you’ve been meaning to read but haven’t had time to do so. Watch a film you’d never consider viewing since it’s not your cup of tea.
Concentrate on what you have control over: You’re in the driver’s seat, and your final destination is yet unknown.
